Pat Smyth, Saddle Creek Golf Club
Pat has been active in the golf course industry for 16 years, with most of his experience at Saddle Creek Resort in Copperopolis, CA. He recently became a class A superintendent with GCSAA and also belongs to the Sierra Nevada Golf Course Superintendents Association. Before coming to Saddle Creek, he was at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, CA where they hosted the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and Pat honed his skills with tournament preparation.
His is a graduate of College of the Desert in Palm Springs, CA where he received his associate’s degree in Turfgrass Management and Horticulture. Pat brings his tremendous knowledge of warm and cool season turfgrass and water management to Saddle Creek Golf Club. During the California drought in 2015 he cut back 65% of water consumption while still providing quality turf conditions. Pat and his crew did an unbelievable job making it through those hard times with superior course conditions. This is an excellent example of Pat’s commitment to our profession and his environmental stewardship.
Clay McKinley, Pueblo del Sol Country Club
Sierra Vista, AZ
Clay has three plus years experience as a head Superintendent preceded by several years of increasingly responsible golf course maintenance operations at multiple top 100 Clubs. In High School he started working summers at Battlement Mesa Golf Course and that is where he discovered his true passion for the Golf Course industry. It was then he decided to pursue a career in turfgrass management and quickly enrolled in the turf program at Penn State University where he earned two certificates in turfgrass management.
He has traveled around and gained experience from some of the finest Clubs in the country. From an internship at Augusta National Golf Club, where he worked two Master’s tournaments, to Assistant positions at top clubs in Colorado and Wyoming and most recently as the Golf Course Superintendent at The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has overseen various renovation projects and has been successful in developing programs to improve overall turf health and playability. He has achieved his Class A status and will continue to pursue Certification.
Clay came on board with GMS in the fall of 2017 as the Golf Course Superintendent of Pueblo del Sol Country Club in Sierra Vista, AZ.
Jeff Frontz, CGCS, High Hampton Inn & Country Club
Jeff brings over 40 years of golf course maintenance experience to our team. He has worked on golf courses since he was in junior high school and continues to contribute his passion to every course he has been involved with. Jeff was Superintendent at Royal American Links Golf Course for 19 year prior to joining the GMS team. He has since served as Superintendent at three GMS properties (Pueblo Del Sol, Saddle Creek and now High Hampton).
Jeff has celebrated 25 years of GCSAA Certification, is a Past President of the Central Ohio GCSA, and served on the OPARR Board (Ohio Pesticide Applicators for Responsible Regulation). He is also a graduate of The Ohio State University. Needless to say, GMS is proud to have Jeff and his accomplished background as part of our team. His dedication and work ethic have helped High Hampton and other clubs progress to another level.
High Hampton is in the process of planning for a major renovation with the Fazio design team in the near future. Jeff and his background will insure success of this project and sustainability for year to come.
Nick Larrimore, Plantation Lakes Country Club
Nick Larrimore has been active in the golf course industry for 12 years working at various facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region. His experiences range from daily fee public facilities to high end private facilities. His pride in efficient utilization of staff and resources to provide consistent championship quality on a daily basis has been a great asset since joining GMS and Plantation Lakes this year.
Nick’s formal education includes completion of his Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Science at Penn State University and Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Goldey-Beacom College. He has experienced many great golf course construction projects from planning through completion. With an impressive background, he also has tournament experience at Merion Golf Club during the 2009 Walker Cup Tournament and Wilmington Country Club during the 2013 Palmer Cup.
Nick is currently the Golf Course Superintendent at Plantation Lakes Golf & Country Club where exciting things are happening! Nine golf holes have been completed and are open for play. The property is planning construction of nine additional golf holes, a practice facility, clubhouse/pro shop facilities, and a new maintenance facility. We are excited about the future of Nick and Plantation Lakes.
Sam Houston, Superintendent, Musgrove CC
With over 23 years of experience in all levels of golf course maintenance, Sam Houston has a well-balance background that insures progress for our properties. Sam has helped various levels of clubs achieve success. This includes The Golf Club of Georgia and Indian Trace Golf Club. It is his experience with different clubs and various budget levels that help Sam produce the best course conditions in market segmentation.
Sam is a graduate of Catawba Valley Community College (Turfgrass Management) and a class A member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He also has participated in preparing for four Senior PGA Tour events. Sam came on board with GMS in spring of 2017 as our Superintendent at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper, AL. He has been instrumental in showing immediate progress at this property and with his skillset and background Sam will continue to help elevate Musgrove CC to another level.
